5" X 12.5" Pistachio, rosewood and ebony. Sanded to 2,000 grit and waxed. This is my "beast" and is turned from pistachio that I harvested myself. There is nothing really beastly about this but the dream that inspired it is pretty "beastly". Andy DiPietro meets Cindy Drozda one night in a dark alley and they scare the crap out of each other so bad that it causes them to screw up the pieces they are currently working on. They decide to put them together as a "collaborative" but then decide that it stinks and toss it into a dumpster. I come along and find it and think is ain't too bad. I take it home and enter it in a contest. So, for better or worse, here it be.

Looks like an especially nice "Beast" "They decide to put them together as a "collaborative" but then decide that it stinks and toss it into a dumpster. I come along and find it and think is ain't too bad."
I would have to agree... "it ain't too bad." ;)

David, the pistachio is beautiful! I think it works very well with the combination of woods - I take it the cap/lid is rosewood and the finial ebony of some sort? I would say this will do very well in the contest - nice diversion for you!

David,
If that's your beast.......you've raised the bar on your beauty!

love the grain in the pistachio, did you make ridges in the finial to match the grain in the pistachio? could you post a blowup of the finial?

Very nice wood indeed and the work is not to shabby either, quite proffesional!
2000 Grit?! That practically piano finish!
Keep them coming!

Cindy & Andy obviously know nothing of art..glad you found their reject & will be able to enter in the contest under your own name. Very good recycling. :-) I think you are becoming a fantastic spindle turner..your pedestals & finials put most to shame.

"I take it the cap/lid is rosewood and the finial ebony of some sort?"

The "lid" is rosewood as is the finial base. The little bead and the ball on the top are black ebony. The "bulb" of the finial is "stripped" ebony.

Nice work David. I love the contrasting grain pattern in that wood.

Although I really enjoy seeing all of the variations of your Amphora themed work, this is the type of form that really draws my attention. This is just absolutely beautiful. I can't imagine how you can call this a "beast" but good luck with it in the contest.

The pistachio almost looks like it is two different types of wood glued together. Very nice wood and the form is great.

It is hard to transition a final from this style forms neck. You did a wonderful job. Well done.

"What part of the country do you find the pistachio?"

Right across the street from my house in Davis, Ca. The tree came down in a wind storm.
