Awhile ago i did a turorial on a 5 centered turning. It must have scared ya;ll to death, with those centers way out at the edge. I was in my shop attic and found one of my first attempts at my negative space designs. This one with the centers (2) are so close to center that you don't get that airplane whirring noise and it's not scary. You can make this just as I said before on the tutorial. All elements here are 1/8 th inch. You might want to use a 1/8 parting but give yourself 3/16 to 1/4 between on a few first tries. At 1/8th the piece is like lace and if you goof, it will come apart at velocity!
As I was trying to get a picture for you my flash did not work & I got the real dark picture. It looks like a spider, doesn't it?
Hope this helps ya'll..have fun!

Nice to see some of the evolution! The "non-flash" pic is neat!!

Thanks for digging these up Michele! I can definitely see the spider though I don't enjoy looking at it for too long. Some spiral type turnings (like this one) seem to bother me just looking at it briefly.

Baxter, if you are like me, when I stare at it the spider starts moving. Nice turning though (when the spider is still)

if you could spin these at a slow speed, they would put everybody to sleep

Nice, was the spider effect something you were shooting for or was it just how it turned out? Really neat.

Michelle,

I like your technique of creating negative space without resorting to carving. I was glad I was wearing my face shield the first time I tried to do some negative space work with segmenting. Do you get any more relaxed at the lathe with experience?

Although your work has definitely evolved, the early stuff is really cool too! (boy, I'd hate to see a spider that big)

Very cool! The dark photo almost looks like it moves as you look at it.
