Hi!
After doing production jobs of 400 wine glasses and thousands of dog tags, I figured it was time to do something fun. My day job is working at a tech company with servers all over the world so I made this computer/arduino controlled panel. Laser cut out of prefinished 1/4" birch. I loved working with pre-finished plywood but after cutting it down to 18x24 pieces, it would warp like no tomorrow. If only there was pre-finished BB.

The panel is 23"x23"x6" so to make the cutting work on an 18x24 laser, I had to split the front and back into two pieces. The sides (23x6) cut just fine.

The map is from http://www.vectorworldmap.com/ with some of the smaller islands removed. I used vectors/ color mapping for the map and love how crisp the results were.

That's really neat Dmitriy, it's also one of the few boxes where I think the black dovetail tabs look sharp design-wise!

cheers, dee

Thanks! After years of trying to clean up the char, I have finally embraced it :) The pre-finished ply makes it really easy to clean the face which is awesome. I also used a vector turbo accelerator (air assist blowing down at 90 PSI). that made the charred edges dark but clean to the touch!

OpenDNS is awesome. I've been working there for almost 3 years now and always make something for the annual company birthday party. Year 1 was acrylic edge lit sign. Year 2 was edge lit acrylic dog tags. This year's had to be something new :)

Was it any faster with the accelerator?

It was faster but equally importantly, the wood came off the machine with a light caramel color edge that was clean to the touch instead of charred, dirty edge. I did not do any cleanup on this wood. NONE! That alone makes it worthwhile to me.

Very nice Dmitriy,

Too bad you couldn't find some of these old school style volt meters...

What is the purpose of the voltmeters?

You could open them up and replace their faces with faces of your own design.
