I posted a Veritas Large Scraping Plane on Sawmill Creek Classified for $150.00 with a A2 extra blade. Plane and blade never used. Lee Valley price is $ 197.00 plus shipping. Had 239 looker to post, and one PM that the price was too high, with no reply to my PM back to poster. Is my price too high, if so what is a fair price? Thanks for your help. Tom

20-25% off of a new, never used item seems very reasonable to me. Maybe the too high commenter was looking at the price of just the plane, not including the extra blade.

Many may have been window shopping, so don't be too tied to watching the number of views. Some may also see posts in the thread as a possible price drop being posted, so they look again, increasing the views.

Whoever PM'd you about the price being high, should have just stayed quiet.
And then not answering your response is just plain rude.

Dan's advice is generally correct but some tools are fairly specialized and don't appeal to a large number of people. There's probably a (large?) group of people who'd like to have a plane like that but it's not their first choice. So they wait for their higher priority planes to come up for sale.

You could offer the plane on eBay and you'll get "market value". If you want to sell it here on the forum, drop the price by maybe $10 every two days. Eventually, you'll hit the price where one of the lookers pulls the trigger. You'll have hit "forum market value".

I just went back and looked at your listing. It might help if you accepted PayPal. Some people prefer the speed and security of PayPal, rather than sending a check or money order.

Since you asked, for a variety of reasons Buyers, myself included, generally like to have the price quoted as shipped and like to use Paypal. For me I will not buy an item if I can't use Paypal, as I don't normally know the seller at all. I feel like I have no protection when I send a check or MO. With a credit card Paypal payment I have both Paypal and my CC issurer to go to if the seller doesn't send me the merchandise. If I really want to purchase something, or if it is of low cost then maybe I'd send a check.

I sold this exact same plane just a month ago, only difference was the extra blade was HCS not A2. It sold almost immediately for the $145 shipped asking price and I accepted Paypal.

This is just my $.02 but I think a certain amout of savings should be there for the buyer when it comes to used tools.

He is buying a used tool even if in practical terms the tool was never used. I dont know that any warranty rights might transfer to a new owner.

Thomas I do think your pricing is fair its just that its so close to the price of a new one why not buy a new one?

Sounds very reasonable to me, and I'm a real haggler. Some folks are like my wife, who would always prefer that someone pay her to take if off their hands.

Thank you all for your great input, I will think it over about a Paypal account. and I will lower the price. Tom

FYI... if you do get a PP account, create a separate bank account to tie it to, not the one you keep most of your money in. I haven't been burned yet, but entirely too many stories of people having their entire accounts frozen, accounts being emptied by hackers, etc.

I'd think that if your price was $150 shipped, and you took Paypal, you are in a pretty good spot - I kinda doubt you will get full credit for the spare blade, to be honest - it's not the type of plane where a second blade really adds a lot, IMO - you might even consider splitting it off as a separate item.

Stuff doesn't always sell immediately. That plane is more toward the "specialty" end of the scale, so you're targeting someone that has been pondering it already - not an impulse buy type of thing, or the type of thing that everyone would want or could use.

The Veritas large scraping plane is not $197 but is $169 and the blade is $28.50 http://www.leevalley.com/US/wood/page.aspx?p=48431&cat=1,41182,48945

As long as your tool is in new condition I'd say your price is not unreasonable.

This is exactly why I won't bother with PayPal, too much risk with too little reward for the seller. All of the rules and protections are biased to the buyer.

My PP account is tied to a credit card, and nothing else.

As is mine so that I can use it to purchase. I'm not really sure because I've never even looked into it, but if you're selling (recieving money) don't you need to tie it to a bank account?

Nope. The money paid to you goes into your PP account. WIthout a bank account linked to it, you have 2 options: [1] they will send you a check - I think there is a small fee; [2] use it to buy more tools here :D :D or other forums , or on-line retailers sometimes accept PP - Rockler does.

I got a check one time. Other than that, my balance simply vanishes via the classifieds section. Basically a function that lets you trade tools, without running transactions past the family accountant.:p

I've posted things in almost new condition for 50% off that haven't sold...I've posted things for FREE that no one has wanted. I have stuff on Craigslist now that are absolutely killer deals and no one's biting. It's difficult selling anything at the moment.

Timing does mean a lot I think.

I tried to sell a Rigid benchtop planer once on craigslist. It was a few years old and I had it listed at just under 50% of the latest model. Coudnt sell if for a couple of weeks and dropped the price some and If I would have had them I think I could have sold 10 of them. I really do think it was more about the timing than the reduced price.

Hi Thomas, I think most of the points have been covered, such as timing, ease of payment, specialisation of the plane, and of course the price and shipping.

Honestly, I think your price is too high, even though I'm sure the plane is in new condition.

I can purchase that plane at the local store without shipping charges, the hassle of dealing with an individual, and it comes with a guarantee because I bought it from LV.

I'd reduce the price, and be patient, it's not everyone who wants a scraping plane. (Although I do own that plane and use it frequently).

Regards, Rod.
