When you saw the thread title, how did you pronounce it? English is a funny language and this is just one example. If it is a manual on basic skills it is a primer pronounced with a short i as in him or primmer. If it is the first coat of paint you put on to prepare bare wood it is primer pronounced like pr-eye-mer. And we wonder why new citizens can't learn our language. :confused: :D:

People who work with their hands say 'pry-mer'. Journalists say 'primmer'. I guess they are more prim than the rest of us.

I think it was George Bernard Shaw who asked how to prounce this word: "GHOTI". In the English language, it's pronounced "FISH".

GH = 'F' as in touGH.
O = 'i' as in wOmen.
TI = 'sh' as in vacaTIon.

My favorite English word is 'circle'. Silent e, two different c's one hard, one soft, invisible 'i'. The French would be proud!

My wife is german--we have this discussion regularly...here's a poem some of you will enjoy:

Finally, which rhymes with enough -

Hiccough has the sound of cup.
My advice is to give up!!!
