For todays project I grabbed a mesquite bowl blank, but I didn't feel like doing another bowl. The blank would have made a 6" bowl plus is was about 5" thick so I thought it would work for a short, fat hf. Cut it into a cylinder on the bandsaw and left the bark so I could do a natural edge.
This is the 1st time I've done a hf with a natural edge, so I thought I'd also do a shape I don't normally do. When I had the outside roughed to shape, I wasn't sure I was happy with the form but I left it as it was. Now that it's finished, I'm pretty happy with it.

Didn't measure, but it's about 4" tall x 5" wide with walls just under 1/8". Just has a coat of DO so far.

Thanks for looking!

Very cool piece there. What's not to like? Interesting form and glad the bark cooperated with you. Keep em coming!

That is pretty! Beautiful wood and I really like that you made it a natural opening! Nice form - looks almost inflated! Also really like the contrast between heartwood/sapwood and the way that helps draw attention to the natural edge!

Nice work! Looking forward to seeing what you turn next!

I like it too. I know the old rule of thumb is widest portion at the 1/3 down mark but I really like bulbous hollow forms with round bottoms. The shape make you want to pick them up and roll them in your hands. Good job keeping the nautral edge in tact. Unless the opening is much larger than it appears, that had to be a bit tedious.

Kathy,
I love the form and must echo the heartwood/sapwood comments. It reminds me of buttered toast.

Very nice looking bowl Kathy. The wood character, shape and natural lip all show a great artist was at work.

I like view no. 2, the yellow is striking next to the dark browns.Do you have a captured system?I agree with Faust, that live edge spinning around would give a person pause.I like your photography as well. Have you thot how you will display it ?As is or a tiny pedestal or other? Rob

That is really neat! I love how (especially in photo #2) the heartwood grain and the sapwood/heartwood brings a sense of asymmetry to the work. My eyes say "form itself is asymmetrical" while my brain says "of course, it's symmetrical it was turned on a lathe". The tension between what my eyes see and what my brain knows, force me to keep looking at it. That work would really stand out in a crowd.

Thanks Faust! The opening is about 1 1/2", that's about as small as I can go with that wide of a shoulder.

Thanks Robert! Yes, I have the Jamieson captured system, I like it and it works well, just can't do really small holes with it. The pics were in the shop, sitting on the lathe, taken with my cell phone. I keep telling myself, one of these days I'm going to get out the photo booth and get some nice pics of finished pieces with my real camera lol. It will be displayed as is, it's got a small concave on the bottom so it sits fine.

Very nice, wish some of that wood grew in Nebraska. That piece would be great on my coffee table.
