Here is a oak bowl I just completed and was talking to Gary Max about. It is 9" across and 3 3/4" deep. I tried a new approach to finishing. After I sanded it to completion I used 220 and 320 grit dipped in antique oil. I sanded with each grit wiping with shavings after each. It really gave me a smooth surface and when dry it had filled the pores in. I have a second coat on the inside and 3 coats on the outside. The LOML said that was her new popcorn bowl so what can I say.

I'll have to try and remember that finishing technique..........I have a lot of white oak from the Stonewall Jackson Prayer tree in my future! That turned out nice!

Bernie - nice bowl and nice wood. I like the rim also. Oak is one of my favorites.

Thanks to all. Roger that finish method really worked nice and left a nice smooth surface. I am going to use that method any time I have open pore wood. The slurry just fills in nicely and just give a smooth surface. Oh and it is already in her cabinet so I guess a sale is out. :D:cool::rolleyes:

Thanks Gary.

Nice bowl Bernie. I'm a fan of oak and have always like the grain pattern and rays in it. Looks like the finish was a good deal too.

Thanks again. I was unsure about how it would turn out but using 220 and 320 it came out really nice. Using the shavings to wipe it down worked better than a rag or paper towel.

Nice work Bernie on what can be a tough wood to finish well. I've done the wet sanding with AO but never tried the shavings wipe before. I'll have to remember that one.

Thanks Tony. It definitely worked better than I expected.
