I bought a Leeson 3 HP 230v single phase motor for a unisaw I am restoring and am confused on how to power it. The cord has a black, white and green wire. I expected it to have a black, red and white wire. I thought it should have two hots and no neutral.
Can anyone help?

Thanks,
Dan

Dan, since green is always ground, the black and white are hots on your 230v motor cord. If any doubt, trace the wires to the inside of the motor's conduit box and see if green is not grounded to the motor case.

Thanks Chip,
Just odd that the second hot is white.

As Chip said green is almost always your ground....even on import machines.

If your saw's plate says 220v then your white and black are hots. Color doesn't matter all that much on 220v and up once you've separated your ground. Once you get into 3 phase industrial, and especially imported, you start seeing brown and blue as well!

good luck,

on a 220 volt setup I have seen white, black and green and also black, red and white, where white is the ground. Just depends on what they were thinking at the factory I suppose.
