A couple of weeks ago I decided it was time to sharpen my bowsaw blades as they were not working too well (to put it mildly).

Read the vintagesaw primer (http://www.vintagesaws.com/library/primer/sharp.html), again... Watched Ron Herman for an hour. Decided I'd got it going in my mind, so I needed to go and make myself a sawvise out of scrap. (Thought of something along Dominic Greco's plan (http://www.leevalley.com/US/newsletters/Woodworking/5/2/article2.htm))

Popped into the shop. Grabbed my plane to prep the jaws and found I hadn't got the stock I needed... and I'm still adjusting my wooden smoother with a hammer + "modifier cap" (not a good solution).

So grabbed some firewood, eyeballed the right size, drilled a 5/8 round mortise and then shaved a thinner branch till it fits. Quite happy with the result. St Roy'd be proud.

How often do you folks get sidetracked?

Cheers,
Peter

Not exactly the neatest saw vise, but well...

How often do you folks get sidetracked?

Just about every time I walk into my shop.

Is an everyday battle for me as well. Always run into some situation where i think I need something to get the job done and start building. When in reality that something really isn't all that necessary, just a way to keep me interested.
