Our local turning club just had a demo by Mark St. Leger. He made a small "treasure box" out of a scrap piece of burl. It was interesting because he mad a couple of jigs I hadn't thought about before. (Mark has a handout here:http://www.markstleger.com/Rectangular%20Box%20with%20a%20Burl%20Edge%20Hando ut.doc).

I had this scrap piece of burl lying on my shop floor for about 3 years now. I've literally stepped over it a few hundred times. Thanks to Marks demo I could stop stepping over it and do something with it. This scrap is about 1.5" wide X 1.5" tall X 5.5" long. The opening is around 0.75" in diameter. The finish is wipe on poly. It was a fun little box and I can't wait to do a few more.

Very cool looking box, the end of it looks like swiss cheese, glad it held together for you while you were turning it.

I have lots of scraps that I just knew I should not throw away and would use someday. Thanks for the post and the handout.

I have some scraps lying about that may yearn to become one of these, I must discuss this with them!

Thanks for the comments. I was surprised it held together at the end. I've turned some out of round items before, but this is the first time I've done something that way 95% air and full of work holes and voids.

I really like the shape and a great use for a small piece of scrap burl. I had seen Mark St Ledger's handout on these boxes before but your box got my attention and made this style of box come alive.

Thanks for posting it. I love the great ideas I get from SMC postings since I have a hard time with coming up with many original ideas from scratch.

Yeah, I always check out the posts with pictures. I always love when I pull up a post and say ooohhh I want to make that.
