This is an update of an earlier thread:
http://www.sawmillcreek.org/showthread.php?169364-Made-some-shavings-today

The hat now has two coats of Wipe on Poly. I will be gone for a couple of weeks and will add additional coats when I get back but plan to keep the sheen about what it is in this picture. The wood is winged elm, made a nice hat but getting the thickness right was a little difficult as the wood did not transmit light very well.

Really nice shape! Also like how the wood has darkened some - shows off the grain even better than before! Nice work! Looking forward to seeing it once totally finished!

I am extremely impressed with how you got the shape of the rim. Was that just the dried shape or did you have to encourage it with a form? Either way it looks great.

Wow, that turned out spectacular! I agree with JK it has the best form of any I have seen. I love the rim detail. Maybe one day I will give one of these a try.

That's a beauty Dennis! and a great choice of wood. I'm very impressed with those that turn these hat forms, and how the brims are shaped so nice. This one is one of, if not the best of the ones I've seen.

thanks everyone for the kind words. I edited the wood type as I made an error reporting that it was slippery elm, it is winged elm. The man who donated the wood is certain about this.

Charlie; It is a size 7 (quite a bit longer than wide)

David; It does not fit my head but should fit the man who commisioned it.

Doug; I did use a jig to adjust the shape while it was drying.

Beautiful job Dennis, that's a super looking hat, I'm sure the owner will be pleased.

For anyone in driving distance of Charlotte...our local club is doing a demo tonight (July 21, 6:30PM) on making mini-hats, which is the same basic steps, just less chips/time. The guy doing the demo is our other local chapter (Southern Piedmont) president, Jerry Measimer, who is a student of Chris Ramsey. Jerry is very accomplished at making a variety of hats. Here's a video series he does, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DQO-V8JpkNw&feature=related .
