Hi All, I am wanting to replace the carpet on the staircase in my home with wood and was wondering about what type of wood to use. HD sells some ready made pine and oak step tops that are already the correct dimensions and fairly cheap 9.99 for pine or 19.99 for the oak, but are these a good choice. Also what about putting some kind of sealer /clear coating on them, do you think that would make them slick, not wanting anyone to slip down the stairs , but would like to keep them looking nice for awaile. Thanks for any advise.

Capet, LOL too bad I couldnt edit the title.

I sure would not use pine -- I think it is too soft for that kind of use
