After a couple sessions of watching Al Neighbors turn and asking a lot of questions, I took a log out of my firewood pile, went to my lathe and ended up with this: (complete with worm hole)
C & C please...
3 13/16" x 1 9/16" x ~1/4" thick, sanded to 320, one coat lacquer

Dane,
Looks real good ,nice shape and finish as a first bowl? You have to love that mesquite, so much character. Worm hole adds to the overall look although that guarantee's it won't ever be full of Frosted Flakes and milk. What grit did you sand to?

Really pretty wood and a fine first bowl! You chose a fairly difficult form with the steep sides and the ogee near the rim, but pulled it off well. Will look forward to seeing #2++++

Pretty good for a first! The wood is pretty, and your form is nice.........how did you deal with the cracking from the pith on the upper rim...........did you stabilize with CA glue?

Al must be a pretty good teacher.........good job!

Thanks guys.

Greg: I sanded to 320. I should have added a couple more coats and buffed but didn't have time.

Roger: I stabilized with CA 3 different times while turning; once before I roughed it, again after final outside shape and once again before I brought it down to final thickness. That may have been too much but I didn't want to send a chunk flying. And yes, Al is a great teacher!

Looks like a great first Dane! Now make a bunch more. My only C&C (this was passed along to me after my first) when you photograph the bowl, make sure you can see the far side of the rim, it distorts the form without the perspective of depth :)
You've done good Dane!

Nice work on the first, Dane! I'd like to see the size of the footprint a little smaller, and that will come with future editions. Looks like you're off to a great start!

Really nice first on some really nice firewood! I love mesquite.... so I hoard my handful of pieces..... and caress them. I suppose I should get outside and turn em, eh?

Dane learns fast and is an easy person to try to explain something to. He picks up tool handling/technique really quick! Sure as heck smarter than I was back in '03!
He can really handle a fly rod, also! Makes me want to move to Colorado where they have streams with real water.

Well done, Dane. Hang onto this one, so you can look back on it later.

Thanks for all the kind words guys. I watched every video of Mr. Hamilton's then watched Al & picked his brain. I had good teachers...

Al, I never would have gotten anything chucked up if you hadn't shown me how. You picked up on the fly casting quicker than I did too. I forgot to tell you that I right after I caught my first fish on the fly, I caught myself. The Mrs. had to cut it out of the back of my shirt. She still gives me grief over that...;)
