Simple bowls but some beautiful wood.

#1 - 6 3/4" x 3 1/4" - AO

201733201731

#2 - 9 1/4" x 3 1/2" - AO

201732201735

#3 - 9 3/4" x 3 1/2" - WOP This one took a lot of reinforcing of punky areas but I like how it came out.

All C&C welcomed.

They are all nice, but I prefer the second one. Something about the way that the bottom curves in and then out again.

Man, that's gorgeous wood! Nicely done on the trio! I'll second Robert's pick for a favorite, but that first on is a close second for me.

Nice job on the bowls and some great wood! Hard to pick a favorite, but I think it might be the first one for me.

Simple is good and you did a nice job with all of them. I like all of the bowls, but the third is my favorite.

Toney, looks like you caught that wood in the nick of time! Actually, all three look like the wood could have been a little soft, but beautiful, for sure! The last one is the most striking wood, and worth the extra effort IMO. The second one is my pic for form. Nice work!

That wood is gorgeous and, like John said, looks like a day longer would have been too long to wait. I love the first bowl as I like thicker bowls, but all are great.

Here is another vote for the second one. Made from some gorgeous wood those are.

I really like calabash style bowls like the first one. The wood is lovely in all of these. I like the form of the second one better than the last one. The last one appears to have too much mass in the bottom of the bowl. My guess that it is the heaviest one of the three.

Cheers,
David

If you do another like the first one with the bug boring holes, take a dental pick and pick out the the residue from the bug holes. The holes add much more character to the piece. I tool like the second the best.

Pretty wood in all! What did you do for the reinforcing? I have some similar maple bowls waiting to be returned. Will probably use shellac or may try some diluted white glue for the real soft spots.

I am struggling to decide if I like #1 or #2 better but all are great. Getting such clean results from such spalted wood on top of great form is fantastic.

I will go with the first as my favorite, a nice clean flow on a simple shape and beautiful spalting. The second one has a nice shape and proportions and the wood is pretty, but not as striking to me as the first one. The third one has some great zone lines and spalting, and shape is good, but proportion of foot seems just a tad big. I'd be looking to bring in the diameter of the third one's foot till no more than 1/3 of diameter of largest section. Wouldn't take much, perhaps only a 1/2 inch or so, but would give similar good proportions as the second one has. Very nice trio, thanks for sharing. I really like how well maple spalts, and perhaps I am partial to the first one because I did one very similar...VERY similar.

#2 is my favorite but #3 is the prettiest wood to me.

Baxter,

For the areas that were not TOO bad, I used thinned lacquer but for the worse parts I used thin and then medium super glue.

Thanks.

Question about the last bowl.

If I would have curved the bottom back in towards the middle would that have give in a more pleasant form?

What say you?

All are beautiful. Spalted wood is a little harder to work with but well worth it in the end.

That's a tough shape for me to do well, but I'll tell you what I'm thinking... The piece you've done is basically a variation on the ogee shape, but the two curves are not balanced. I think a more balanced ogee might improve the flow of the piece. Another option would be to continue the upper portion into an outward flare creating one continuous curve from top to bottom.
