…she said. Yup, it takes up a little more room than I thought, but no more sticking my elbow into that sharp pointy thing on the tail stock. Been wanting to do some deeper hollowing and longer spindles, so I ordered a bed extension for my PM4224 from the Norfolk VA Woodcraft during their last sale. Got a call from the owner next day saying Powermatic no longer made the long (65”) bed extension and offering to return my money. I said I’d rather have the extension and mentioned I had seen it for sale from some on-line vendors, he double checked with Powermatic and got the same answer but he’d see if he could end run PM and order the parts separately. Eventually I ended up with a regular bed that I had to modify to do the job. I know they probably didn’t sell all that many but you would think a major manufacturer like PM would support the accessories in their catalog for a line of equipment they are still actively selling. Makes me wonder if a new lathe might be in the works??
Anyway, here’s proof you can hook two 4224’s together. 200357

I had to bore out the threads in the new bed and do a little grinding so the bolts would fit, but after a few hours of fiddling and a little honing here and there, everything lined up and she’s ready to rumble.

Now that's a lathe, your going to need a couple steady rests for that. Think of the finials you can turn now.

Holy Crap! That's one big lathe! Now you need a second tool rest and 2 people can turn at the same time. Can't wait to see the first thing you turn on that!.

HOLY MOLY!! It looks like a yellow Oliver now! You must be planning some really tall pieces. I can't wait to see what you end up turning on this setup.

I do had to laugh because when I clicked on the first picture I thought, "how the heck is that going to work? That second bed is a lot taller than the original!" lol

John,

It's a little over 104"total, but I lose 4" because of the cut-out for the drive mechanism...so 100" useable.

Nate and Greg, I'm thinking of an homage to DoubleD's goblets, only eight feet tall with a light bulb inside the top :)

Ted, That is a lot of cast iron! I was going to make a 3' extension for my 3520B some day, just don't have the room for that length! Looks darn impressive though, and will be fun making som big posts and 6' tall thin stem goblets!

Waiting for the first spin,

Jeff

Man!! I thought I was compensating when I stepped up to the PM from the Jet mini. This must be über compensating. Next thing you know I will a have a wall full of Glasers!! I feel so inadequate:D:D:D:D

Very impressive lathe configuration! Begs the question... What are you going to turn on it? One piece pool cues? Porch balusters? Center posts for spiral stairways? Just curious....

Steve, I had in mind bed posts, lamps, decorative columns, deep hollow forms with a modified boring bar... I wasn't kidding about scaling up one of Double D's goblet forms. It will also be a nice firm place to sleep when SWMBO is on the war path.

Let's see if you walk that bad boy across the floor;);) That is a true Mustard Monster...all others are pure imitations:eek::eek:. I am glad to see you using a magnetic on/off box. You would walk several miles a day going back and forth to turn the lathe off:D

That's amazing. You could turn columns with that beast.
