A long time ago I got a slab of really good quilted BL maple that yielded 3 platters. This was the largest. It's 22 inches. The rim has a 3/8 in. bead. What a joy to turn a piece of wood like this and watch the figure pop out

Eh... that's OK. Not bad figure. Seen lots better than that. No biggie... The smattering of quilting does add a bit. But otherwise an excellent platter. I love the beaded rim...

That's lovely, Wally! No amount of burning, coloring, or texturing can beat what that wood has already got going for it!

Thanks John. I doubt that David has ever seen quilted wood. Probably thinks quilt is something you sleep under.

Wally, Now you can take the platter and make a body for it and have the back of a really sweet banjo! It always seems that the best curl and flame maples end up in the luthiers shops, but you got a dandy chunk of wood to work with!

In a word "Stunning"<

Fantastic form. I am nowhere as accomplished as the other turners here, but the quilted maple does it for me. Everyone has their favorites, but Quilted Maple is in my top three favorites for all projects.

I have never seen quilted maple before, some slightly curly and some birds-eye but nothing like this. But after see this I sure look forward to seeing it again.
