A few months back I turned a pen at the Wood Show in Houston. I've had an old lathe that is not int he greatest of shape for awhile now. Thanks to the help of Creeker Michael James I was able to get a good working tailstock. Unfortunately my garage/shop was a mess and honey do's were too long so I never got a chance to use it. Well today I treated myself to some time on that lathe after cleaning the garage. I turned this very simple candle stick holder. Since I only can turn between centers right now I drilled the hole for the candle stick holder. In doing this I damaged the lip a little with my vise.

The wood is unknown I got it at a garage sale for 50 cents. Seems to be some kind of mahogany. I finished it with BLO.

And so it begins!!! Even though this may be a simple turning, be sure to sign and date it because there is only 1 first turning! You will be amazed at how much your turnings change with just a little time behind the lathe! Have fun! Looking forward to watching your progression!

Great start Russell!! Nothing wrong with between the center stuff...plenty of stuff you can do with that. So what's next?

Congrats on your first. I agree to sign and date it. I did this with the first of all my turnings to compare a yr or two down the road. You will be amazed.

I'm not sure. First thing is to actually clean this thing up.

Congratulations Russell on getting that wood lathe put to use. Hang on to that candle holder. That first turning will be the first of many things to come. It will always be enjoyable to look back & see where we have come from with our turning.

Nice job......now turn a small saucer shape to hold the holder. It's a slipperier slope into turning!
