The man I get my lumber from gave me two 7/4 x 8" x 6' planks of cherry that had been drying in his stacks for 15 years. One of the thing I do for him is give him the first project that comes out of the wood he gives me. I wanted to try something a little different for the bowl and will use this as a prototype for some of the other projects I have in mind. The bowl portion is finished with WOP and the rest with Tung Oil then three wheel buffed. For the 1/2 tool gloat, I sold some dive gear I didn't use anymore and bought the Woodcraft 8" low speed grinder, a Sorby 1.5" HD bowl scraper and a Crown 1" Skew ( neither one pictured). The reason I'm calling this half a tool gloat is because my CBN 180 grit wheel is on order. Once it gets here it will be a full tool gloat. Sorry about the poor pics of the bowl, grabbed a couple snaps as I was on my way over to his place to look at a nice Bradford Pear crotch we're going to cut tomorrow.

I really like this bowl, especially the way you finished the bottom.

Nate,
real nice job on that cherry. I also like the bottom treatment, the wide lip on the top works for me also. How deep is the bowl.I really like the dimensions on that .Excellent

Greg, the bowl portion is probably about an inch deep. I tried to match the inside curve of the bowl to the outside curve.

Steve, you and John K. are totally to blame for the CBN wheel order.......Thanks:D

Nate, congrats on the grinder and other tools, and that CBN is going to look great on there! Nice work on the bowl - really has a nice character to it, and the cherry has that aged look already.

That's a really nice bowl, Nate! I love the form and the thickness... This shape is screaming for a number of wooden spheres and a spot where it can be displayed.

very nice, Nate, you do not find 15 year old cherry every day, should be dry now

What a great bowl Nate! The foot drew me in, haven't seen that approach before!

John, once I final sanded I set it in the sun for a half hour per side, darkened it up nicely

Nate,

That's beautiful wood and you did it justice with your idea of thickness. Well done!:D

Very nice bowl, Nate, simple but elegant. Good choices with the tools, the grinder and the new wheel. I also upgraded my grinder from a 3500 rpm 6' to a variable speed Delta 8", but it has 60 and 30 grit wheels. I don't see much use for the 30 grit wheel and from yours and other discussions the CBN 180 would be a great addition to consider.
