After butchering a couple of saws over the past several years, I have hade to that I don't have time to learn the skill. 2 hours a week is about all I can manage in the man-cave. Sharpening hand saws just isn't a priority, but I do like using them.

Where is the best place to send them for hand sharpening? A couple I would like to have re-toothed as they are too fine.

When I first saw the title of this thread, I was going to say, "you can," and go on about how to get into it.

Though if your time is that limited maybe you do need to find a service.

You need to find a way to get a few more hours in the "cave."

James, there is someone local (http://www.industrialsawandgrinding.com/catalog.php?item=36) you can investigate. This is within driving distance for you so you can check out their shop as well. I discovered them via their Craigs list ad. I've never used them (I do my own sharpening/butchering) but their prices seem very reasonable. Do share your experience if you decide to go that route.

Daryl Weir has sharpened a couple of my saws. He is very good. Also, Bad Axe offers a sharpening service. I've never used Bad Axe but I've heard they do a very good job.

FWIW, I've heard that Mark at Bad Axe has been recommending sending saws to Matt Cianci (thesawblog.wordpress.com) because his turn around time for resharpenings has gotten quite long as Bad Axe has starting doing more business in their custom saws. No mention of this right now on the BadAxe website, but I believe it was mentioned on BA's facebook page, and on Matt's Saw Blog (http://thesawblog.wordpress.com/2011/05/23/new-saw-sharpening-service/)

I haven't sent a saw out to be sharpened yet, but I've heard nothing but great praise for Mr. Weir's work. I hope to get some scratch together at some point to purchase one of his refurbished saws, as it seems like every time someone posts something I want on the classifieds here at SMC, it's just after I spent my tool budget for the month...

Thanks for the info, I've never dealt with Mark at Bad Axe but I've heard a lot about him, and it's all been good. He makes some really great looking saws and I hope to own one some day. I was lucky enough to get a couple of Daryl's saws a few years back. They have been great saws. The difference between a properly sharpened saw and one that's not is the same as the difference between using a saw and not for me.

I just got back 2 cross cut panel saws that Bob Rozaieski of Logan Cabinet Shoppe (http://www.logancabinetshoppe.com/saw-sharpening.html) sharpened for me. Did an amazing job for a very reasonable price. And you won't find a nicer guy.

Daryl Weir resurrected a 150+ year old dovetail saw for me in record time. I was extremely impressed.

I have used Daryl Weir since he was recommended to me by Chris Schwarz and have never been disappointed. Daryl's work is first class and he is a very nice guy to deal with.

Not one bad apple in all the names posted here. Any of these guys (plus some others, Marv--where are you?) can provide you a fabulous sharpening.
