This is a root system from a HUGE Oak tree. It's gotta be at least 10ft tall. Alot of fire wood and bowls in there. No burls though.

Donny,
How can a tree so large have such a shallow root system. Is that normal for your area?

That is an incredibly shallow root system for such a massive tree, I am surprised it lasted this long like that, is this typical for that type of tree?

Great picture Donny! Have you given thoughts to putting your Jet up on blocks and turning that rootball outboard?:D

I've seen Ponderosa Pines in Northern Arizona with roots that only went down about 6", hit a limestone bed, and then travel out about 8 feet diameter. The trunk was about 2 feet plus, and the tree was about 80 feet tall before it blew over..... Jerry (in Tucson)
