I pick up nice log of honey locust on friday.I did seal ends with Anchorseal, and called guy with saw mill but he wont be able to mill the log for 4 weeks.
Is it too late? I can not find anybody else to cut it.
Do you know someone in Chicago land area with saw mill.I bring the log to them.
Thank you.

No problem letting the log sit. I would put 2 4x4's under it to get it off the ground.

Honey Locust is a pretty wood, just be warned, its hard and is a challenge to work with.

Also, keep it out of the sun if possible.

Yep, off the ground and in the shade if at all possible and it'll be fine. I milled some honey locust a couple of years ago, and the comment about it being hard is really true, also heavy. But it is beautiful; a nice pinkish color. Now I just need to find a suitable project for the 100 BF or so I got out of that log.

I googled Chicago area sawmills. Looks like there are a few. Here is a link with some. Not all shown of course are sawmills.

How many board feet of lumber do you think I will get from the log.Its 11' long, buttom is 33" and top is 32" in diameter.
I find other guy with sawmill and he will mill it to 4/4 for $ 400.I dont think its good price.
Thank you.

According to my math, in a perfect world without waste, you would get 65 board feet, which comes to more than $6 per board foot.

I worked out a different answer as follows:
32.50 inches diameter
16.25 radius of log
22.98 inches per side of squared log
1.91 feet per side of squared log
3.67 square feet of end of squared log
40.33 cubic ft of wood in squared log
0.02 feet thickness of quarter inch slice
16.00 ESTIMATED slices from sawmill blade
0.44 cubic feet of kerf removed
39.89 cubic feet remaining after kerfs

478 board feet out of squared up log

Well I guess that is what I get for doing math in my head at 11:56 pm on Friday!!

That seems like a lot to saw one log. I had three comparable size logs of walnot and it cost me $75.00. Did you google for sawmills in the northern part of Illinois, southern Wisconsin area?

Using the Doyle scale (which is the most conservative) you will get 539 bft from that log.

I get logs milled for 32.5 cents per bft with no minimum size. $400 is way too high IMHO.

I'm not familiar with Honey Locust lumber but if it is light-colored, you will probably have some staining considering the heat. Moisture + heat = bacterial/fungal activity. It doesn't sound like you have a choice, though.

I get log mill today.I find nice guy in Morris IL,about 30 mils from where I live. He charged me $ 120.I think I have about 380 BF of lumber.
He used Woodmizer LT 30 and circular sawmill with 60" saw blade.

Honey locust is pretty stuff. I've got a short trunk section that I need to cut into bowl blanks.
