It's the end of the school year. My 10-year-old daughter wanted to make a gift for her teacher and asked if I would help her make something on my lathe. She's seen me make gifts for many relatives and friends in this way, and am glad she noticed. So she designed a pencil holder on her sketch pad, and we set about turning it. She did most of the roughing, all of the sanding and finishing, and I turned beads where she indicated with a pencil and hollowed the form. It's apple finished with some Mylands polish. I could tell she was pleased with her effort, because she kept wondering whether she could really give it away. I told her she could make more. Thanks for looking.

Tell your daughter she did well and that Ms. Jaffe will cherish that for years to come.

WOW! Be sure to tell your daughter that not only did she do a great job on the finishing - she did a great job on the design also! Having a hard time letting a piece go sure tells you that you did good on it! Her teacher is going to love it!

She did a great job with that and it is wonderful to see young people wanting to do woodworking and give it as a gift. Thanks for sharing the pictures and story behind it.

Great turning by the both of you. She is 10 now? Hmmmmm I will give her a year or so and she will want her own lathe, tools, chuck, wood, etc. Just to keep out of your way, of course:D:D:D:D:D

That's a fantastic design, and I really like the contrasting colors of the wood. That's one lucky teacher, and one special daughter!

It looks great, but she's got it all wrong... You give the gifts at the beginning of the year, so they'll be good to you.;):D
