A simple 'rustic' styled bowl I turned from an amazing old piece of Oak, filled with cracks and burr. I just can't resist old distressed Oak. There are two large cracks repaired by way of what is known around my part of the world as a 'Proper Job'
Its 14" wide and has a satin lacquer finish.Comments and critiques welcomed. There is a detailed WIP on my blog linked in my profile if anyones interested in seeing the stages and the thoughts behind the styling.

Johnny, what a unique way to embellish a crack! Great job on this one, and a bowl full of character. Nice burl going on, too.

Now that is just too cool. Who would have ever thought that fence staples, as we locals call them, had any artistic value, and utility to boot.

Very interesting design. I like the idea of incorporating foreign items in our turnings. Thanks for sharing

Johnny,
That is really cool. How did you come up with the idea of using staples? What a wonderful idea and it fits beautifuly. You don't know how much scrap wood you may have saved in this world.

I have already commented once but Ditto David's comment and a quick question.

Did you pre-drill pilot holes for the staples?

Just plain neat. I don't usually care for 'stitching' and the like, but that's unique. And I like the pyro'd design.

Thanks for all the comments, I don't care what anyone says Creekers IMHO are the best group on the internet, always willing to look and give their thoughts on posted pieces, something that doesn't happen everywhere......... I am glad to be among your number (even though I'm a foreign interloper!) ;)

How did you come up with the idea of using staples?

Ed, these old rusty staples stick out of old Oak gateposts in fields and farms around here and I guess I've just seen them all my life and become influenced. They just seem right sticking out of old Oak!

Did you pre-drill pilot holes for the staples?

James, yes I pre drilled the holes(wasn't willing to risk more splits!) and also shortened the staples as these are really old ones got out of some old posts on a disused railway line and are about 2" long. I drilled the holes slightly smaller than the diameter of the staple ends so that they are held in by pressure only.
