This came off the lathe yesterday-----Cherry Center Piece.
It's to darn big to sit on a shelf. The opening is 6 inchs and she is 14 inchs at the widest point and approx 11 tall.
No finish at this point just wiped down with oil.

i like it.

Had to stop and spray the lathe bed down with WD-40 every 1/2 hour to keep it from rusting---this tree was cut last weekend

Right now I am shooting everything with a Satin Gloss polly. My goal is to turn at least three of these larger item every week.

IMHO I do not think a turner could ever go wrong with cherry. There are certain stages that cherry goes thru though that I wished I could stop permanently. (stopping at a certain color changes) Pretty nice piece.

That looks GREAT! I like it with the oil. I'm sure it would be nice all shiny too, but this more natural look is really attractive.

I like big forms like this. It's funny, I see pics of turnings and imagine them this scale only to be surprised when I read that they thing is actually like 4" tall.

That must have been one heckuva cherry tree. Very nice. I love cherry, but the cracking is killing me. Do you do anything special to help it dry safely?

Gary, that is an awesome piece. Cherry is great to turn and puts a nice smell in the shop. I just hope it doesn't crack on you since it was freshly cut. Is it hollowed down through the pith? It about has to be since its so big. Beautiful work.
