I want to thank everyone who responded to my, 24" Powermatic band saw thread. Yesterday I found an old Davis and Wells 20" band saw that was in need of restoring. I really liked the old cast iron saw. Did I say heavy. So, I decided this was the saw for me. It was disassembled a bit, loaded on a trailer, and it followed me home... I am going to disassemble the saw and restore it completely.

Thanks again for everyones input.

Sam

Now that is going to make a great band saw, I really like the gauge for the tension, it looks really cool.

Make sure you post some shots when you get it all done.

Good score Sam. Once you go cast iron it's hard to go back. Take a good look at the tension spring. The one on my y20 snowflake had gotten pretty weak so I replaced it with an Iturra spring had it made a huge difference. Those saws are capable of pretty good tension if the spring is good. Saw looks to have a nice size table as well. Dave

Thanks everyone. I am excited to get started. However, I have to finish a couple other projects first. Jeff, I do not have any idea what year the saw is. I am still researching everything about the saw. Jim, new bearings, flea dip and powder coat, you got it. Joe, I wish it was done... Dave, I am going to check out the spring and get a new one if needed. The blade was under tension when I purchased it. I bet it has been that way for years.

I will post progress photo's as I go along.

Thanks everyone, Sam

I wouldn't be surprised if after getting the clown paint off it, you found a badge saying Oliver.
Not much info is available on 20" D&W band saws over on vintagemachinery.org
The tension gauge seems to be unique to the 2520 model.

Myk, I don't see anything that looks like it is under the paint. There is a thick layer of paint however. On the upper wheel housing there is a metal plate that says, "Sold and Serviced by M N Thackaberry Inc, Wood and Metal Woodworking machinery, Los Angeles and Pasadena, Serial #117". That is the only markings I can find.

Thanks Sarge.

That is a beautiful saw Sam. Enjoy that. I can't wait to see the after pics. I love the wheel cover doors. Are those cast as well? Impressive build quality!
