Well, another day of obsessing!. Some stainless steel rod, some JB Weld, some more paint and a few hours later and this is where I landed:

197936

And just in case anyone was thinking about pointing out that the tailstock wheel did not match the rest of the machine:

197937

I might even turn something on it again one day...

its pretty, will it turn???

That is beautiful. I love beautiful tools, they make me want to use them!

Let me know how the JB weld holds up, my only gripe about my toolrest is that it isn't hardened steel, it would stay much smoother, much longer if it was.

Beautiful! I'm thinking you've lost your love for turning, and now you're into rehabbing machinery ....:D

Now get it dirty!

"...now you're into rehabbing machinery..."

Naa. But I do have a "thing" about finishing whatever I start. I do think this is done now. Unless someone else gives me another idea (please... no more!)

Well - I think it is all artful and stuff and can't imagine what you could do to improve on it.... Looking forward to seeing what you turn next!

Why don't you come spend a week in Alabama and paint my PM 90?

I don't want my wife to get wind of this... I've been telling her the inability to finish a task once begun is a sign of genius.

BTW, that lathe would look awesome sitting on a pure black floor!:D

David, I think you will like the smaller rod on the rests - really makes a difference. Not as much as a neat paint job.....but, it does make a difference.

BTW, don't go for the black floor - shows lint and dust too easily!!;):D

I already tried it out... works great. Much better than the CI! The 3/8" SS rod seems "just right". And no black floor. It's not officially part of the lathe so it doesn't count...

As to the Stainless Steel, I have the Oneway bowl rests, which are stainless, and they are not as slick as the drill rod. I do believe that if you buy drill rod, it still needs to be tempered.

Nice rests, flashy lathe, I do believe you could be turnin/cruisin with the top down. Does that tent top fold back?

I don't think his is "hardened" steel but it's so much better than the CI that I'm not going to complain!

Yeap those were the only finishing touches it needed. You will enjoy the tool rest a lot! Now for some shavings.

Reed, you're correct, Drill rod is typically sold annealed, unless it is specified as hardened.

Is it safe to assume you've already taken care of color matching your steady rest?

Really nice work on cleaning that lathe up...your father would be proud.

"Is it safe to assume you've already taken care of color matching your steady rest?"

Ha! Nice try. But the steady is already the "correct" color... Interestingly, the painted parts of the Monster rigs are too. Exactly the same gray "hammer finish" as the base of my lathe!

Oh now, that is just mean. True, but mean. ;)

If you want the best slide factor, think Polished Industrial Hard Chrome plated rod.

Right... Maybe I'll pick some up next time I'm over in China...
