I am in the market for a mid size lathe. I have it down to the Delta 14" cast iron bed lathe, which I can get for around $590, or the Grizzly G0584, which I can get (delivered) for $425. Same size motor, roughly the same capacity, different leg design. Is the Delta worth $165 more than the Grizzly? I have both Delta and Grizzly products in my shop, and like them both. Paint color makes no difference, I am just looking to get the best lathe for the money.
Thoughts and/or opinions?
Thanks,
Don

Hi. I'm new to this forum--have just been lurking for awhile--and am not quite sure how to respond to your question. I owned the Delta 76-710 for about a year (basically the same lathe--just an earlier model). I made alot of things on it but always had trouble with vibration. Even weighting it down with three sand bags it would shake and tremble if I put it to the test. I finally threw the front bearing out completely when I tried to turn the inside of a vessel about 11" tall without a steady rest. The Reeves drive has been around for a long time but it also was a constant hastle. It had to be adjusted and dinked with constantly. I also had the large Grizzly lathe with the Reeves drive and had the same problems with it. So I probably wouldn't recommend either one! I have heard alot of great comments about the Jet so you may want to look at that. I know it's even more money but it may be worth waiting for.

On the other hand, if you are going to do only light duty projects either one will probably do.

Take these comments for they are worth (not much). I now have a Powermatic and it's wonderful. It's up to anything I want to throw at it--but it certainly costs alot more than the ones you are looking at!
