Bed building question

I have to build a bunk bed set for my grand kids. There is no question it won't be hard to surpass the quality of materials used in all but the more expensive sets. My question(s) is this. Where are good sources for bed hardware and also a good source for plans. Most likely I will end up customizing an existing plan. My daughter-in law has a firm idea what she wants. Any and all advice is welcome and I thank you in advance.

The stamped hardware is pretty light duty, I used some a few years back the twin boys, and I think their Dad, where pretty hard on the bunk beds.

I'd stick with the cast stuff if I did it again.

I always use lee valley for most hardware. I was looking at bed hardware for a queen bed I will be building shortly, and lee valley always has top notch customer service. as for bunk beds I'm not sure what hardware would be needed.

+1 on Jeff Miller's book, I bought the book when I was building this bed for my son. The book covers all basics of construction as well as various options. In lieu of bed bolts I never used any threaded barrel nuts or any other prefab bed hardware, just your ordinary hex bolts. With barrel nuts you need a round hole to match the dia, with a flat nut you have to chisel a D shaped hole. So just a little more manual labor will save you some cost. I suspect there is no compromise in strength. Dennis made a pretty nice set of bunks for his kids, he should be able to give some hand-on advice.

A vote for Lee Valley. I used some of their bed hardware, and it was really very good. A friend of mine used Rockler hardware and it was good as well. Don't think you can go wrong.

Rockler plans, but modified the legs and used hex bolts as bed bolts.
