I'm not sure what this shape of vase is called. This one is turned endgrain from a Black Walnut log. Because the log was a limb, the pith was quite a ways off center which gave it an interesting look with the heartwood/sapwood contrast. There was also some weird windshake or something running parallel to the grain that added to the overall figure in the wood. There was a small chip out of the neck that I filled with turquoise along with the pith hole in the top. It's 9.5" x 7.5", finished with the Keith Burns 10 minute finish.

That sure is some different looking Walnut! Very pretty variations in grain and color! I like the turquoise filler - really goes well with the dark Walnut color! Not sure what this form is called - but it sure works!

Looking forward to seeing your next turning!

Very rich looking chunk of wood. Can't go wrong with walnut. I also like this form.

very nice, black walnut has a chambered pith, looks sort of like honeycomb, and it sort of wanders around in a piece, being a limb and reaction wood, no telling

Curt, this is a very nice piece! I see this form in various urns, etc., and the only reference I can find is this -
Peltastiform - Shield-shaped or formed like a shield.

However, I think the term "The Fuller Vase Form" works just fine!

Not your run-of-the-mill form Curt! That may be why I like it a lot! Finish is my favortie and the wood was a great pick for a vase. Bravo!!
