My first time working with this wood. I was surprised at how hard it was, both with the chain saw and on the lathe. If I had known this stuff looked this good I'd have been cutting more of it...........This one has a couple of loose pieces near a void at the edge, and I hope it will stay together until I can finish it. According to the newly acquired moisture meter, it's pretty darn wet........

Charlie,

It's about 11 1/2 x 4. If I have to cut out the bad spot it will be 11 1/2 x 3 ! This came off the farm, so it has some sentimental value as well. It guarded the diesel tank ever since I can remember, but it's time had come........

Richard that is going to be a nice piece. I really like turning mimosa and have turned quite a bit. I just bought a bunch from Mike Smith. Richard I rough turn them thick and then coat them entirely with anchorseal. I have had excellent luck doing this. Takes longer to dry. Probably 8 months to a year but I am not in a hurry so it doesn't matter.

Richard, I haven't turned any mimosa, althought I do have some though! From what I know of the tree, it is relatively short lived and a fast growing tree. For that reason, it shouldn't be that hard to turn, but you already have more experience with that than do I!!!! Looks like it is going to be a very nice looking bowl.

Mimosia is a hard wood when dry. I turn it wet when I can. I've got one I'm finishing up now and as long as you have sharp tools you will do fine.
