Originally turned this bowl five years ago. The wood was beautiful. Nice spalted maple, but really clunky, about three fourths of an inch thick with a shape worthy of burlap. It's just been knocking around the house looking for a purpose (they wander aimlessly without a purpose). Didn't even hold change with grace. Just for kicks, I threw it back on the lathe and re-shaped it....thinner, with a bit nicer curve and some crown molding on the foot. Now it's developed an affinity for popcorn. I think that'll work. (13 x 6.5")

Great form on the re-turn. I think the inside undercut on the rim is a nice touch. I love the spalting touch. What is the final size?

Ted, I don't know what the original looked like but this is sure a beauty now. That's some spectacular wood and the returning really looks good.

Wow!! Forget popcorn! That's worthy of a steak and some potatoes, maybe some asparagas or green beans! Really nice re-birth Ted and the size is really cool!

Really like the beautiful wood and the refinement of the form. I redid one this spring that I turned back in 1998. Much thinner. Thanks for showing us that old bowls can be just long term stored rough outs.

Dont know what it looked like the first time around, but I think it was well worth redoing it because this one looks great, Iam sure you all will be enjoying popcorn out of this for years to come, well done!

Many thanks to everyone for the kind comments. Don't be shy about putting something back on the lathe for another look. If you didn't like it's original form, maybe a tweak or two can give it new life and your skills may have improved in the interim.

I went back in time and looked at your bowls from 5 years ago, Ted. Kinda cool what time will do!! There was nothing wrong with your style back then, and this modification simply shows a refinement that can only come from refinement of touch. Pretty neat!.
