After seeing Kathy Marshall's mushrooms, I grabbed a couple of logs off the wood pile today and gave it a shot. These are from green silver maple. I figure that they will crack, so after I took these pictures, I coated the end grain with some sealer. It might help. the smaller one is about 9 inches tall and 6 inches wide and the larger one is 10 inches tall and almost 7 inches in diameter.

My 4 legged friend already has her eye on them. I think she is part woodchuck as she loves to chew wood, but hopefully not these. I plan to anchor them down with a metal rod in the bottom and pushed into the ground.

Greg, Those are great! You are gonna mess up your neighbors heads with those giant shrooms growing in the flower bed:D:D

The mushrooms are fun but very few craftsmen can turn a dog.

Greg, those are cool. My neighbor had a maple limb that fell in a recent storm. She dragged it over beside her house and was waiting until someone could come over and cut it up and haul it away. Early one Saturday morning, I "borrowed the branch, cut down the pieces I could and made about a half dozen different shaped mushrooms.... They ranged from 4" high to about 8"... I took the finished mushrooms back and put them where the limb had been... A couple of days later we were watching when they discovered the mushrooms... It was fun... Both turning the mushrooms and watching the neighbor find them.

"My 4 legged friend already has her eye on them. I think she is part woodchuck as she loves to chew wood..."

I don't think that's it. That dog is trying to figure out if those are fire hydrants or not.

Totally cool..... I was wondering how you turned the dog, and then I read the thread. :)

Nice job, Greg! Jamie Donaldson has done several of these, and some of them are quite large for use as garden ornaments - probably 18" or so tall.

Very cool Greg. Sometimes it is advantageous to not have a male dog.

With all the rain we've had Mother nature has provide all the mushrooms in my back yard that I can handle. Really nice looking though. It will be interesting to watch the change as the age.
