Just picked a quart of Crown brand denatured alcohol "NEXT".

It appears to be about 95% ethanol:) and 5% isopropanol.

I am going to give it a try on some garnet and blond flakes.

Anyone else see this stuff? I just picked it up at Lowes.

J.P.

PS Maybe this should be in the finishing area?

Nope. But, I get Klean-Strip Green at HD. Also 95%+ ethanol. Use it for my flakes all the time.

It is labelled "green" because the ethanol is renewable. I get it because it doesn't seem to have a strong an odor to me.

I've used all manner of ethanol/isopropanol mixes with shellac. In general, the higher the propanol, the slower it dries. This is nice because it's a little more forgiving if you have to backbrush, but it also extends the drying time modestly.

Back when I used to buy a quart of Crown it was only 40% ethanol.. (80 proof), you must have found the *good* stuff!!

..oh yea.. and I always avoided using it on flakes... :D

I think that should be 'dry' enough. I use anhydrous ethanol from the local pharmacy, 99.5+% ethanol since there aren't good alternatives available locally (having 35% methanol as denaturing agent is not a good alternative). It's like $13 for a 500ml bottle, but I don't think it's prohibitively expensive. Good stuff.
