Here are some pictures of a mantle I just completed. It was made to match a custom door so it is stained and has three coats of satin poly. The wood is African Mahogany. Note the "Texas Stars" on the ends and center panel. The are made on a ShopBot like Keith Outten has.

Mike, you did a fantastic job. I think I'm gonna steal a couple of your ideas. :D

I might be PM'ing you soon with a couple of questions.

Beautiful job Mike. Can you show us a picture of the rear of the mantle to show the interior construction?

Cliff, I didn't think to take pictures of the rear and it is hung now. The frame was heavy enough, made from 3/4" Baltic Birch. It was a box with the rear open. The top, front, sides and bottom were screwed to it. The molding floated between the top and raised panel frame so it could expand and contract. The top and bottom had slots drilled in the frame to move also.

Mike, beautiful job on the mantle. I hope you don't mind I've filed those pixs away in my idea folder. Almost makes me wish I lived in TX. Lars

Thanks Mike. I've been wanting to build a new mantle, but had no idea what was going on behind the scenes. I guess I need to break down and buy one of those Kreg jigs :)

If you were in Houston, I'd let you take mine for a test drive. You'd love it. Money well spent.

Mike, if you have any other construction photos available, I'd love to see them. I think I'm going to break down and get that Mantle book at Woodcraft I've been eyeing.
