I made this Elm bowl today as I need some practical/utility shaped bowls for a craft fair I'm doing in a couple of weeks. I couldn't help but add a decorative band to it...
Its 11" wide and made from a piece of English Elm. There is more about it on my blog, linked from my profile.

That's a beauty, Johnny! The decorative band is 'just right'.

I like it too. Elm is such a handsome wood. The bands compliment it well.

I love you full bodied work Johnny. This bowls with some mass to them are right up my alley. Beautiful job

Nice use of the banding to accentuate a strong appearing elm wood. Very nice color and form.

Beautiful. What did you use to darken the band?

Thanks for the nice replies. I really love Elm, its a lovely timber to work and I think it's as beautiful as any exotic.

Beautiful. What did you use to darken the band?

Its a purple(beetroot coloured) spirit stain.

Another lovely piece as I've come to expect. Even your utility items have a certain elegance to them.

The form is inspiring. It has a very solid look to it ("some mass" as Nate Davey says above), but because the rim tapers into the bowl, it also has a the elegance of a thin turned bowl. My eye is constantly drawn between the crisp edge, the tasteful band and the solid wall. If you don't mind, I think I might imitate your design for the next couple bowls I make (I'm still a beginning wood turner, so I like to find forms that appeal to me and practice turning them).

Very nice form and embellishment! I think it should go fast. I really like the contrast between the bands and the grain.
