At least, I think that's what this is.........http://photos.imageevent.com/richinva/turning/misc/websize/2011-05-27_19-32-23_317.jpg

From a piece in a customer's woodpile, very dark on the ends after aging a while, but yellowish, creamy color inside, and turns beautifully..........nice, long, fat shavings, like turning butter.

Opinions?

I'm celebrating Memorial Day by cutting hay!!!

Looks like Mulberry to me, could also be Osage.

It looks just like the Mulberry I cut up last month.

I have some mulberry out in the shop that a guy gave me, but havn't done anything with it yet. Will have to go give it a spin and see how it turns for me.

Could be mulberry, but your description of how it turns reminds me a lot of pear. I don't think it's osage orange... The shavings from that stuff are fluorescent yellow, and it's pretty hard stuff.

Not osage, I've used that before, much different color and workability.......

Could it be magnolia (tulip tree)? I turned a piece of it awhile back and it looked very similar. What's the diameter?

Looks exactly like the mulberry I'm working with right now. FYI-I see your tenon there is all sapwood. I've found that really green mulberry sapwood is pretty soft; be careful making too heavy a cut on the inside of that bowl. I've found that just one little catch with the mcnaughton corer and sapwood tenons just snap right off.

Nathan,

Thanks. This was so small, I didn't even think about using my McNaughton on it, but will file your idea away for future........on second thought, maybe I should write it down...............:)
