Guys,
Just saw this ad for sale in my area. Is it worth $700?
I've been saving for a Delta 46-460 and happened to see this. Should I keep saving?
Thanks in advance for your comments/suggestions.

Joe

The lathe is a Delta 46-715 -- 14 inch swing with swing out power head. It's about 5 years old. The accessories include the below chuck with extra set of jaws, about 10 different chisels that I paid anywhere from $20 to $ 80 a piece for. A couple of face plates, light and a couple of calipers. Includes the chuck below.

The Oneway Stronghold Chuck is a 4 1/2" geared key chuck that is an excellent choice for woodturners who need a heavy duty chuck that is capable of holding large diameter work. With No. 2 jaws, this chuck will comfortably handle work up to 14" in diameter. Larger work is easily turned using large jaws.

Includes: #2 profiled jaw set, threaded insert, woodworm screw, T-handle tightening key, 4mm hex wrench, and owners manual.

Price: $286.99

Joe:

I can't speak for the 46-460, but I had the 46-715 and replaced it with a Jet 1642. Main reason was the variable speed control. The Delta uses the Reeves Drive and while mine never gave me any problems, it was noisy and it would not go slow enough, specially for the larger pieces. The 46-460 has received good reviews here on SMC.

Greg,
Thanks for your reply. I read several reviews on-line and they said the same thing you said about the Reeves Drive. I think I'll pass this up and hold out for the 46-460.
Thanks again,
Joe

I wouldn't. The -715 was one of the most returned models throughout my time at Delta. Not only was the drive system wonky, the ways were often warped(right out of the box) and the speed control handle was subject to breakage. Pass this one by...

I can't comment on the 715 but I recently turned on a 460 and it's a fantastic machine.

Guys,
Thanks so much for your comments. I think I'll pass on the 46-715 and hold out for the 46-460. Sounds like a much better lathe. Now, if my rich uncle, "Sam", would just get us a little raise in SS, maybe I could get it sooner. Not much chance of that happening though.

Thanks again.
Joe
