Can anyone tell me what kind of wood this is?

If it is an old handle that you have cleand up I would guess it is beech.

I also would guess Beech. But some more information on what it comes off of for a saw should really help nail it down.

The saw etch is very very faint, in fact there is only one small part of it that I can see; what looks to be the top part of an "S", but it might be something else altogether. The medallion is a "Warranted Superior" so that really doesn't provide much help. Does anyone have any advice concerning raising the etch? The blade has been cleaned but and there is no rust but there is a lot of dark color left in the blade and I'm afraid to sand much more.

Hard to judge by having only the small pic. Beech seems to be a good guess since that was a common handle wood. Though the grain pattern leaves some doubts. A larger close-up pic of the handle might be helpful.

Looks like reasonably quarter sawn beech. Quarter sawn means you paid someone a quarter to saw it for you.
