View Full Version : Blue Dyed Lidded Vessel Final Finial?

So this is the finial I think I'll go with. Tonight I turned another exclamation point with a better bead on the bottom (needed the bead as a place to drill a hole for the tenon on the lid).
I dyed both the lid and finial black using india ink then gave it a first coat of spray on semi gloss poly. I'll add a few more coats of the semi gloss then knock it back if needed.
The vessel still needs more coats of WOP then a buffing, but I'm happy with it so far, the blue and the curl remind me of water.

Pics not the best, looks a little foggy (I think the lens might be dirty).

Thanks for looking!

I like it Kathy! Fits the form and the black blends in with the coloring - effectively highlighting the blue. Nice work!

Hi Kathy, I too am in Arizona, Tucson though. Just have to say, that is very cool. Love the finial. Great job on the color & finish. And welcome to SMC.

Kathy, got to thinking about your need for a bead - do you have a Nova chuck? Another option for you in these situations is to chuck the lid in soft jaws, and turn away the tenon, drill a hole, and then make a male tenon on the finial. Might be easier for you.

Just a random thought.

I like the blue dye look. What is your process for doing that, and what dye did you use?

Great job Kathy. Had to be a lot more fun than work on a radiator in Arizona. Thanks for taking the time to share and keep them coming.
