I picked up a Leigh D4R off CL this weekend for $200 (stealth gloat :cool:). Last night I was setting it up to practice a few dovetails and knocked my DW721 router off the bench onto the floor :eek: (IDIOT). A quick inspection revealed only a cracked phenolic bottom plate so I exhaled. As I continued the set up, however, I noticed the router was “wobbling”. A closer look revealed a cracked lower housing (IDIOT). A quick internet search showed about $100 for replacement parts alone equaling my original CL cost for the router. A year or so ago I bought a Jessem Rout-R-Lift FX when they were closing out the offshore units, bought a Bosch 1617, and made a TS extension router table. Since I already had a plunge router, I skipped the EVSPK package with the plunge base and only bought the motor (IDIOT). I’ll search the forums for router reviews, but my initial thought is to get another 1617 since it gets good reviews and I’m happy with the unit. However, this time I’ll get the EVSPK. I’ll have a fixed base for the dovetail jig, a plunge base, and a back-up for my table mounted unit. Good thing my birthday and Father’s Day are only a couple of days apart! I’m open to suggestions and/or confirmation that I’m an IDIOT. :o

Don't feel alone. I did the same thing. I have the 1617 with the EVSPK. It was sitting in the fixed base on the bench when I knocked a board off the table saw it hit the router and knocked it to the floor. Smashing the base to bits. I had already purchased a second 1617EVS motor for the router table for $150, figuring I would never need the extra bases. The new fixed base cost me $70. The 1617EVS-PK package only cost me $190. So now I have spent more on the separate motor and base than the kit cost. Ugh.

I finally learned to ALWAYS set the tool on the floor.

I've never knocked one off the floor!

Now I have lipped shelves under my benches to hold plugged in tools and cordless.

The way I see it, is an idiot is just a genius that just needs more sanding. ^_^

I had a bad habbit of leaving chisels on my bench loose while sanding with my power sander, that doesn't go over so well.

I originally bought bought the Bosch 1617 EVSPK kit. Later I wanted another motor. I looked around and found a 1617 with a "D" handle base, for the same price as the motor without base. I eventually bought several other routers (for various reasons). The 1617 with the D handle base is dedicated for use with my Leigh D4R jig.

As a side note, I was given enough rubber interlocking flooring squares (1/2" thick) to cover the floor around my work bench and the front and sides of my cabinet saw. The rubber floor tiles have saved many tools, projects, and my feet. I believe you can get the same thing from Wally World.

I'm also in the same idiot camp. I bought an Incra Miter 1000 HD about 6 months ago and 3 weeks ago, I put it on a stool behind me so I can move some things around and then I turned around and bumped into the stool and it fell off and hit the ground and bent one of the indexing tooth. My Incra sqaure was also on that stool and that got knicked up pretty bad when it hit the concrete floor. I was pissed! :mad:
