I turned these two hollow forms back in March while taking a class at the John C. Campbell Folk School.

They were turned from wet Florida Rosewood. I sanded to 220 grit, then sealed with a 50-50 mixture of sanding sealer and mineral spirits. The next day they were sanded again. The first HF, the vertical one, was sanded to 400 grit. The second to 1000 grit. They were then buffed and waxed using the Beall buffing system.

The vertical HF is 7 inches tall by 5 1/2 inches wide. It's a bit clunky with 3/16 inch at the rim, at least 5/16 inch on the sides and a 1/2 inch thick base.

The shorter HF is 4 inches tall by 7 1/2 inches wide. The top is 1/8 inch thick, 3/16 inch down the sides and 1/4 inch thick base.

My instructor later confided that he was SURE I was going to blow the second one up! I didn't and I am proud of it.

Thanks for letting me share,

Mark

Mark, such neat wood!! I love the contrast of the sapwood, and it is particularly attractive on the lower form. Both are nice, but the form on the lower one is much better IMO. Nice work on the finishing, too.

I would love for Ms. Keeton and I to go to John C. Cambell for a vacation of sorts next year - she is thinking about it!!

Nice work on both forms Mark! I like the more contemporary styled hollow form and know that hollowing the inside top portion of those forms can be challenging! Congrats on being able to finish it without incident!

Looking forward to seeing your next hollow forms!

A slight thread hijack. John, you and the MISSUS(AKA SWMBO) should plan on going to JCC Folk School. Take Mike Staffords box making class. I am sure that Mrs K could find a interesting class.. Mike is a hoot to be around.

The forms are very nice and well executed for you first two HFs....but it's hard to notice anything other than that wood. It is terrific looking. I love how the lighter grain overtakes most of the top of the shorter HF.

Good job!

Both are beauties! I love that wood and the way you've incorporated the heart and sap wood. Both forms are great too. I really like the shorter piece.

Wonderful work Mark!!! You have a set of twins...don't break 'em up :)

I wouldn't get too worked up about the "clunkyness" of the vase though. People love to feel the weight in a vase. It's just the woodturners that think they should be thin ;):D

Wow for your first 2 these came out fantastic! And I love the wood you used, that has some great contrast in the grain.

Thanks everyone for the kind words. I too favor the second one. It was suggested in the class that I just turn a bowl from the blank since it was too short for a hollow form. I decided to let the bowl be Plan B. :)

I didn't mention that the instructor has a friend that works at his local landfill in FL. This Rosewood came from a log that was in the dump!

I think we all need to find someone like that.

Super work, Mark. Lovely wood and it looks like you have a very solid concept of form.
