Do you have your first bowl?

I was tripping around a bunch of junk in the shop the other day, and kicked up a pile of....stuff. And I came across my first bowl.
195504

Quite a looker eh?
If I recall correctly...(and I may not recall correctly because I'm not much a recaller) that this piece looked better many years ago. Although, I'm fairly certain that it looked about the same as it does right now....but I certainly thought it looked better with younger eyes.

Oh...then I progressed, due to Sawmill Creek and the wonderful tutelage and comradery.

And I came up with this
195503

I called it My First SMC bowl. But it should have been named "The First Bowl I Had The Guts To Show Anyone"

Oh.....but then I got on a roll and decided to do a vase. There was no stopping me....I knew I could make a beautiful vase. It was in my mind, and all I had to do was put steel to wood and the picture in my mind would be transferred to the wood. The art was flowing out of me and into the lathe. And I proudly posted the result.

So....Where's your first bowl?

Aw heck...that's a great picture Roger!! Nice bowl too. I think this thread is gonna remind me just how lousy I am as a turner.

Tim's first looks great too!!

Shheeesh!

My first was walnut, small, and done on a metal lathe. Easy to make straight sides and a flat bottom that way. 15 or so years ago.

Not counting some bowls I turned in a couple of intro to woodturning workshops I took (which never got all the way finished), my first bowls were cedar and are still in a stack in my shop. I just finally got around to starting to put finish on a couple of them recently. Some of them are pretty decent and some of them...well. Not so much.

That's pretty cool Paul....'Course ya know, that's cheatin'. Didn't you have all those handled screw adjuster do-dads to control everything? But no matter....turning is turning...and that is another fine looking first.

I have no turning history pre-SMC! My all consuming vortex slide has been played out in full view. But, for those newcomers, this is my first bowl posted December 22, 2009 (http://www.sawmillcreek.org/showthread.php?127823-Got-the-chuck!-The-first-bowl-dish/page3).

First Turning (vase) 11/08
First Bowl (Walnut) 2/09
Second Bowl (segmented) 3/09
It took me a while to get my hand on some logs, so I started by gluing things up.

John,

Really had to dig through the archives to find the stuff that started it all! The photos are a little rough but that was back before I knew anything about gooder picture taking!

This first photo is a group of my very first turnings! As you can tell - the sky was the limit as to how many curves you get force onto one piece of wood! The photo was taken Nov 23, 2004 and all the wood is spalted White Birch.

195659

My first bowls... spalted White Birch, Watco Natural Danish oil finish, and I am guessing around 6" to 8" diameter. I believe I still have them stashed in the shop somewhere. Photo taken Dec 6, 2004.

I continued to turn and eventually filled the kitchen table with 'stuff' - all of which was very artful! The morning after the table was filled, I came out to grab a cup of coffee and the table had been cleared. Figured Colleen, who had to go into work real early that morning, was tired of looking at everything! Turns out she took everything in to work with her and sold them! Came home that night and surprised me with a check! You mean folks will buy this stuff??? Hummm... I will have to think about this! :D

March 20, 2003.......3 pieces of steamed beech glued together (does that qualify as segmented?), about 4" x 2.5", no finish. Cat still uses it.

John,
Not sure if this was my very first bowl....if you can call it a bowl, but I made it in about 2000 for my wife. She's still using it. It's pieces of Cherry glued together vertically cause I didn't want to hollow out anything that big. Somehow, I did manage to get the inside fairly smooth but for the life of me can't remember how.

John,

You may or may not remember my first bowl. It launched but I was able to finish it.

That's a cool picture, Ed. Kinda like what happens to a lot of my pieces too. Filled with do-dads...tucked away...and every now and then I get a glimpse of the past. Cool. :)

Okay here is my first bowl, it was mahogany and maple and everything was going along nicely, i was very happy. then a monster catch and the bowl became junk. i did glue the busted piece back just to show my wife what it could of looked like. she still keeps it up at the cottage fills it
potpourri. guess she figures it covers up the ugly crack. second picture is my first goblet. its a little ugly too, but with all the help from you people my turnings are getting better. far from great but getting better.

You guys have some great firsts! Here's mine. At least the first one I call "unsupervised" as I did one bowl in a half-day class, which shall forever be forgotten.
