195105My friend, Scott Fles and I created this segmented turning of a hot air balloon. It is the first juried show either of us has tied to enter so we are very pleased.

It is comprised of 1340 pieces. Cherry, maple, walnut, white oak, sapele, and purpleheart.
Balloon is approximately 19" in diameter and 23" tall , and the basket is 4.5 " diameter by 4.5" tall. Basket held by eight 1/16" steel cables. Walls hollowed to about 5/8" thickness. This is our fourth segmented turning. It has been great fun to turn with another person. Lots of shared information between us. And lots learned.

Comments and critiques welcome.

Thank you for looking,

John

Stunning!

I guess this is a huge compliment, but I looked at the picture before I read the text and said to myself "this guy turned a hot air balloon" .... very cool indeed.

I need to give Scott the credit for coming up with the idea for a balloon, and the design of it. Thanks Scott. Now what to do next ?

Did not keep track of time, but I am sure it was well over 200 hours, between the two of us. I am going to keep track of time on the next piece we do.

John, a big CONGRATS!! Very well done on the turning - way more patience than I have! For a permanent display, this piece really begs for a laminated wood stand using some or all of the same woods - actually, I think three of them would be plenty. The general shape of what you have works, but I would more closely follow the form and have it as narrow as the weight would permit. I think that would take this wonderfully done piece to a new level.

Hi John, Congratulations. What show - Festival Art Competition or Art Prize? It needs to be in both. That is beautiful work that you and Scott did.

Dick-Its in the festival of arts show at museum next month. Waiting to get venue for art prize.

Michelle- Had to laugh at your post as we named it "Up Up and Away"

John-Thanks for the input. Acrilyic needed to be that wide to support it. I would have liked to mount it on the underside of the top,and have it pierce thru so the mount on the bottom was not seen. We considered wood grain but decided it would take away from the balloon. Next time I'll go for a round base though.

Just wanted to say thanks to everyone for all the nice comments. There is an artists reception next week so we will get to see it in place at the art museum. Who would have thought I would be displaying an item in an art museum! Not me.

Very cool, John. The piece is very impressive, and the photo that includes people really shows the enormity of the thing. Best of luck on the show!
