Could someone share their experience or direct me to a good source of info featuring the use of color dyes on wood?

Many thanks

I was just reading up on kool-aid as a wood dye.

There you go....the grand sum of my knowledge.

Whew! That was an ear-full, eh?

Tony,

Here are a couple of threads that may explain what it is I do for dying my work. About the only change is that I would suggest using TransTint dyes a lot more often than RIT because they are reported to fade less over time.

I don't dye, but I can second Steve's suggestion to use TransTint over RIT. RIT is an organic dye, and these have a (deserved) reputation for fading over time due to air and/or UV exposure... if you keep your turning in an air-tight closet you'll be okay ;) RIT is often used by home-shop anodizers, and black is one of the worst for fade resistance. TransTint dyes are inorganic compounds and do not suffer from such maladies.

Check out some of Joe Landon's work on the AAW site (and WoW too, I think), and then see here for a tutorial on how he does it -

I've only dyed one small turning but I have used dyes a lot in my furniture. I use TransTint . They will mix with many different carriers.
