I seem to remember reading something on here about straightening a saw plate with boiling water...I think from George.

Can anybody help me with the particulars? Does it need to "soak" for a time? Do you pull it out to cool, or let it cool in the water? etc.

Help appreciated.

When I tried it, based on George Wilson's info in that thread, I laid the saw down on my back porch, got the water boiling on the stove, carried that out, dumped it on the saw, picked up the saw (with gloves) and bent it. I bent it too far the other way so I bent it back a little... so I think there's a little time to work with before the steel cools off. Not counting the time to boil the water, the whole operation probably took less than two minutes. Some people seem to be able to straighten saws cold but that wasn't working for me. Maybe I'm just a girlie-man.

Thanks for the link to the thread. I don't know why I couldn't find it when I searched.

Just went out and tried it....worked like a charm.

Thanks, George.

I recall when Roy Underhill quoted (not saying he believed it), that an old way to straighten saws was to get into a lake and smack the saw hard on the water!!!:) Pun intended,I think it's all wet.
