I don't expect this piece to set the turning world on fire but I just have a soft spot for the simple beauty of Elm at the moment and thought I would share this little bowl with you. Its only 3" wide and about the same tall. Oil finish and the textured band is painted with acrylics.

Nothing simple about this little gem. Excellent form, turned thin with very nice accent band. Well done.

Well Johnny - you have a certain sense of style - that is for sure! Beautiful little bowl and I really like how your detail ring gives it an old world flavor! Looks like something you would expect to see at King Arthur's table! Very nice work! Thanks for sharing!

One of the many great things about the creek is seeing work from all over the world. Johnny, you bring a very different, and very refreshing style to the table. Beautifully done!

I usually turn down elm around here when people offer it. Most of it is dull brown and yellow. I've dyed ones I've turned with red mahogany. Really like the banding treatment and the vertical grain pattern. Thanks for sharing.

Love that piece of elm and the great little banded bowl you made from it.

Thank you all for the nice comments :) I did forget to mention that its an end grain bowl. English Elm is really rare now as we had 'Dutch Elm Disease' kill off all Elms of any size here in the UK back in the 70's. I was lucky enough to spot a slab of it at the local timber yard that they had for years, the slab had a large rotten hole in the middle that meant no one had ever bought it. Not a problem for us turners who can just cut out all the good wood from around the hole, so a very reasonable price was agreed and I loaded it on my truck and left a happy man!!

I love this vessel. The warmth of the elm combined with the elaborate texture of the band is a winner! Very, very nice.
