Question on bearings

How do you know when the bearings are going out? My lathe (jet 1014i) is making a knocking noise, but there's no play in the shaft. Could this be a bearing issue? :confused:

I have found that bearings usually will "growl" or squeel. I would look at pullies and belts.

If the tailstock is not totally in alignment, you can get a knock from that...... Jerry (in Tucson)

Sometimes there can be something stuck to the underside of the belt or pulley that will make noise.
