Does anybody know of a good resource for burl? Our local Woodcraft store rarely has any, and if they do, they are too expensive. I'm willing to rough it in the woods to get them, but I don't recall ever seeing any sizable burl in the wild. Do they grow more in any particular part of the country?

Eric, there are hundreds of sources for burls - some domestic, some Aussie, etc. Many of them advertise in some of the turning magazines. I buy Big Leaf Maple burls from Mike Smith http://www.easternncwoodworkers.com/ You may want to give Mike a call. He deals in domestics, and may have other burls, as well.

eBay is a good source if Mike doesn't have what your looking for.

There's this yard not far from me....two old maple trees...about 40 feet tall...covered in 6" diameter burls....must be a couple hundred of them.

You ring the doorbell, and make the people chase you (call them names or something), when you go around the corner, I'll start cutting.

I'll need about 12 hours....so be sure and make them real mad

Two suggestions. Bad Dog Burls and Oregon Burls. I have bought from both and no problems.

In addition to what's already been mentioned, I've had good experiences with Australianburls.com for Aussie stuff. Cory Norgart sells black ash burl and some others on upnorthburls.net... I've got an order in route from him. I've had good luck with local tree guys for elm burl and recently some redbud burl. If you find a source not listed here, please let us know about it.

Eric, I will agree that (for the most part) Woodcraft's burls are WAY overpriced and you can use the contacts above to get a good deal. BUT, if you really look... once in a while there is a deal in the Woodcraft bin. Last trip I bought a red box burl blank for about $12. I had never turned any of it and didn't know what to expect. Least to say, I wish I would have bought the other two blanks because the wood was fantastic and after checking around... the price was too!

besides being kinda pricey on turning wood in general, Woodcraft doesn't do a very good job of labeling their wood so alot of the time you (and they) are left guessing as to what kind of wood it is

+1 for Mike Smith

I'll second that, Keith... I picked up 10 blocks of African Mahogany (roughly 4.5 x 4.5 x 2) for $1.25/block. They'll make some nice bottle stoppers, and I'm thinking a set of four or eight sake cups/saucers.

I was just out at Mike Smith's place ( www.centurytreeturnings.com ) on Monday and I can say that he has enough burls to keep any turner happy for quite sometime. Mike is great to deal with and very fairly priced.

+1 for up north burls. Cory is a member of the turning club up here. He has a wonderful selection of burls. Black ash is my favorite.
