I turned quite a bit of maple in April. This is a nice crotch(14" x 4" deep). I beaded the top with a 3/8" spindle gouge before turning the inside. I mixed a little alcohol dye with lacquer and used a detail spray gun to put down a even coat of dye stain. Multiple layers of clear lacquer.

It looks great! You did a very good job with that detail gun, the color is consistant. I like the beads that you cut also.

Fantastic piece of wood, Bob!! Great color and form, too. Personally, I prefer your footed bowls, but Keller will like this one!;):D

Great, elegant form. I really like the lift and return. It's wide without being chunky.

Foot or no foot, you are turning out some very nice bowls. The dye job looks great.

I choose no foot on this one for some existing factors. First, because of the bark facing the top of the bowl I was trying to get as much width and depth as I could. The feather in maple sometimes can be pretty shallow, so I used as much of the bottom as I could. Also to show as much of the feather on the bottom with as little interruption as possible, I choose no foot. A third reason is that the amount of wood at the bottom allowed me to remove the small tenon that was present. Sometimes when I don't get it right, it necessitates having a foot because it would become a funnel if I tried to remove the foot. This bowl is about an eighth of an inch in the recess at the bottom

I like the color too, and the feather in the middle is great! This bowl will look great on a table filled with apples or anything, it should hold plenty of suff!

Bob, your layout and finish really show off this wonderful piece of crotch. Very elegant form and, as usual, expertly executed. Also like what you did with the dye job.

Yup...what a beauty. Deserving of a stand, mounted vertical for all the world to see.

Ditto to what Scott said. 1/8" bottom could be a little fragile on a bowl that size though.

Really nice bowl. The feathering looks great and it couldnt have been centered any better. YOu did a great job on the finishing.
