Howdy folks,
Been lurking here for quite a while and decided that today is the day I make my introduction. I've been turning for about six months now and this site has been my biggest source for information and guidance...can't imagine where I'd be without it. I'm a college student born and raised in NC and picked up turning as a hobby to distract me school from time to time.
I picked today to make my first post because today I made my first of very many visits out to see Mike Smith ( www.centurytreeturnings.com (http://www.centurytreeturnings.com) ) and his shop. My girlfriend and I went out there with no real idea of what to expect other than a lot of wood. And man...there was a lot of wood. The kind of place that you never really want to leave. Meeting Mike was awesome. We stood around and talked about this and that and he was very informative and helpful when it came to picking out my first batch of wood. It was almost impossible to decide what I wanted to get on this trip, luckily my girlfriend had very little problem grabbing chunks knowing she's going to get what is turned from them. Mike gave me a great deal and I will surely be visiting him much more often than my bank account would like. :)
Anyhow, I'll finish up my rambling with the treasures I picked up today. Hopefully I'll be able to figure out what piece to start with sooner than later.
